Spinal Cord Injury

We are one of only 18 Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems in the U.S., which means you’re at a hospital leading the nation in treatment and research that improves long-term outcomes for individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI).

Our focus is simple: Get people with SCI back to life. Whether that’s getting back to work or school, participating in the community or returning to the activities you love, we’re here to help.

Specialized training

We have doctors with specialty certification in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation, as well as nurses, psychologists, social workers and therapists with advanced training in SCI.

Implantable neuroprostheses technology

We’re a global leader in improving upper and lower limb function, trunk stabilization, improved breathing and coughing, and bladder function.

Ongoing support

We are home to the Northeast Ohio chapter of the United Spinal Association, where members gather monthly to attend medical lectures and meet with providers of new products for people with SCI.

Ventilator expertise

As the only Ohio facility that admits ventilator-dependent SCI patients, we have the experience and advanced technology to wean many patients from their ventilator.

Specially designed rooms

With a unit dedicated to SCI rehab, our rooms are all equipped to accommodate patients with ventilators or tracheostomies.

SCI Special Programs

  • Spasticity management to help patients regain muscle control
  • Neurological prosthetics that restore hand, lung, bladder and lower limb function
  • Radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulators for pain relief
  • Ongoing clinical trials of new treatments that may improve your quality of life

Outpatient Spine Care

Once you are discharged, you can continue to receive outpatient care at one of our outpatient rehabilitation facilities. Outpatient therapy, research studies and education are all part of the services offered.
